Welcome to Altamont, Illinois! We are your typical small Midwestern town. You can find us half-way between St. Louis and Terre Haute, just off Interstate 70. Hope this site will encourage you to stop and visit if you've never been here, and if you have, I hope I renew some good memories!

The Old Oak Tree
I find it bittersweet to lose the Oak tree from Klitzing Park. I spent hours playing under that tree when the old school still stood. It's believed the old oak was at least 150 years old--it's been there longer than Altamont has been a town! It was hit by lightening several years ago which caused damage to the top. Then high winds a few weeks ago took out several high branches. It was hoped the tree could be topped and saved, but time had exacerbated the previous damage and it was decided for safety reasons that the tree had to come down. The corner looks so "naked" now!

Dollar General
Dollar General isn't new to Altamont, but it does have a new home and a new look. The store has relocated to the south end of town. It can now be found off the Interstate across from Mcdonald's. The new building means more floor space for coolers, freezers and an expanded grocery department.

Farmer's Market
Altamont now has a Farmer's Market! You can find it at Klitzing Park each Saturday through the end of August from 8 to Noon. Find a variety of fresh produce, baked goods and crafts, plus the Schuetzenfest will be selling bratwurst.
(For anyone that would like to have a booth, it is $5.00 and you can set up after 7 o'clock.)
