Welcome to Altamont, Illinois! We are your typical small Midwestern town. You can find us half-way between St. Louis and Terre Haute, just off Interstate 70. Hope this site will encourage you to stop and visit if you've never been here, and if you have, I hope I renew some good memories!
Ha ha, first you most likely who had a Dentist who discouraged eating sugary foods by how the sugar helped decay causing bacteria stick to his patients' teeth. In another contrast to the buildings history, you have a Bakery cooking Delicious German Style Foods. My dad was born 100% German at 1/4 of a mile East of Altamont. Dad could only speak the "Low German Dialect" until he had started learning English at age 6 . God Bless the People of Altamont, and please try teaching the German Language and Good Side of History in your class rooms. Martin Luther would be one place to start and how the Lutheran Faith found its way up into what are the five Scandinavian nations in Northern Europe.
