Altamont has had a Public Library since 1908--the first being started by Mrs. Mabel Jewell. The location changed from time to time, until it found a permanent home in the Municipal Building in 1968. By the late 80's the library had outgrown it's home and a new location was found. In 1991 the library moved to the former Torbeck building, also the one time location of Eckhardt's, on the corner of Washington and Third Streets.Welcome to Altamont, Illinois! We are your typical small Midwestern town. You can find us half-way between St. Louis and Terre Haute, just off Interstate 70. Hope this site will encourage you to stop and visit if you've never been here, and if you have, I hope I renew some good memories!
