S&W Supermarket

S&W Supermarket has been owed and operated by Leon Schaal and Gerald White, Jr. since March of 1978, who purchased the grocery business from Roy Young. At the time it was located on the corner of Division and Main Street. In 2001 they purchased and moved to the IGA building on the opposite corner of the block.

The store attracts customers from the surrounding towns because of it's quality meat. Leon and Jerry try and offer locally grown produce and manufactured items, such as Doug McCain's Bar-B-Q sauce.



New freezers were installed in February, expanding the frozen foods department.

Altamont Public Library

Altamont has had a Public Library since 1908--the first being started by Mrs. Mabel Jewell. The location changed from time to time, until it found a permanent home in the Municipal Building in 1968. By the late 80's the library had outgrown it's home and a new location was found. In 1991 the library moved to the former Torbeck building, also the one time location of Eckhardt's, on the corner of Washington and Third Streets.

The library offers computers for public use with a genealogical room, reading areas and a large children's area.

Effingham County Antique Mall

April 1st saw the Grand Opening of Altamont's newest antique spot! Owned and operated by Ken Young and Fritz Richter, the Effingham County Antique Mall is host to 48 dealers at the present time. Housed in the "old bowling alley", this building has also been home to the Bleacher factory and Napa/Radio Shack in recent years.

Woo Hoo Sisterhood

Cheryl Hoffmeister lost her friend Jolene Arend to breast cancer November 13, 2008. Jolene was a kind, giving person and Cheryl wanted a way to honor her memory. Thus, the Woo Hoo Sisterhood was born! Jolene's friends meet on the first Monday of each month. Any one is invited to join them. Pictured here is a recent bake sale benefiting a family who's infant son had recently had major surgery.

W.C. Klitzing Memorial Heritage Park

Klitzing Park, locally known as "the train" park was the site of the "old" school, the original wing being built in 1904 as a High School. A new wing was added in 1928, making it a combination Grade/High School. It became the Grade School exclusively when the "new" High School opened for the 1953/1954 school year. The last year the "old" school was used was for the 1975/1976 school year. It was demolished several years later and the ground was made into a park. Some of the play equipment is still being used--notice the monkey bars and the merry-go-round! The basketball court is still there, plus the tennis court, which is now used by skate-boarders.

Triangle Video

Triangle Video can be found on Rt. 40, next to Casey's. It has been owned and operated since 1994 by David and Kim (Corbin) Frailey. At one time a small diner owned by Charlie Davis sat on this spot. Kim offers $1 movies on Wednesdays, and a tanning booth in the back.
